Nimota Ogunyemi, a Youth Corps member serving in Lagos State has said “our environment is our responsibility and we are obliged to take care of it.”

Nimota Ogunyemi said this when she held an inter-school competition amongst senior secondary schools in Lagos Island LGA on the 3rd of October, 2024.

The competition with the topic “Sustainable Living: Adopting a lifestyle that is friendly to the environment”, she said, was meant to increase climate awareness amongst young people.

Eko Akete Senior High school, Elegbata, Isale Eko Grammar School, Oke Suna Senior High school and Boys Senior Academy emerged as the top 5 finalists in this competition.

Oke Suna Senior High School finally emerged as the winner with a cash prize of #50,000, Elegbata Senior High School got a cash prize of #30,000 for being the second and a sum of #20,000 was awarded to Isale Eko Grammar school for winning the third place in the competition. Boys Senior Academy and Eko Akete got #10,000 consolation prizes each.

The organiser told students in attendance at the event that “There is need for people, especially the young ones to see that the change starts from us – you and I.  We should play a part in creating the world that we want to see;  a green world. Through Sustainable Living, our activities in our daily lives contribute to a better planet.”

Nimota as an advocate of SDG 13 (Climate Action) urged the Federal Government and State Governments  to include Climate Education in the curriculum of secondary schools in the country.
