UI Appoints Dr. (Mrs.) Mariam Adetoun Zakariyyah First Female Bursar In 78 Years

The University of Ibadan has appointed Dr. (Mrs.) Mariam Adetoun Zakariyyah as the Institution’s first female Bursar.

The University Bursar is a statutory top management position of the institution that overseas the accounting books and financial management of the university.

Profile of Dr. Mrs. Mariam Adetoun Zakariyyah               

Dr. Mrs. Mariam Adetoun Zakariyyah (née Adegbite) is an accomplished Nigerian accountant, academic researcher, and the first female Bursar in the 78-year history of the University of Ibadan. She assumed office in July 2026, succeeding Mr. Adewuyi Popoola.

Professional and Educational Background

Education: Former best HND Accounting student at The Polytechnic, Ibadan, holds an MBA, a Master’s degree in Economics, and a doctorate in Accounting.

Professional Affiliation: Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN).

Career at UI: Rose through the ranks within the Bursary Department, previously serving as Deputy Bursar in the Treasury Unit before her appointment as the 10th substantive Bursar.

Affiliations: National Financial Secretary for Criterion (an association of Muslim women in business and professions).

Personal LifeRoots: Born and raised in Abadina, University of Ibadan, as the daughter of the late Alhaji Adegbite, a retired university staff member.

Family: Married to Dr. Nurai Zakariyyah, and they are blessed with children.
