President Donald Trump of US has
announced a two-week, “double-sided” ceasefire in the war with
Iran on late Tuesday, April 7, 2026. The ceasefire came just hours before a critical 8 p.m. deadline he had threatened to obliterate Iranian, in a war that the US has suffered huge loses of fighter planes and international reputation.
The agreement, mediated by Pakistan, followed an intense period of escalation where Trump had warned that a “whole civilization will die tonight” if terms were not met.
The primary condition for the ceasefire is the immediate and safe reopening of the Strait of Hormuz to maritime traffic, with coordination through Iran’s armed forces.
Trump described a 10-point peace plan submitted by Iran as a “workable basis” for long-term negotiations.
The “10-Point Plan” for Permanent Ceasefire, as demanded by Iran’s Supreme National Security Council are:
*Control Over the Strait of Hormuz: Continued and expanded Iranian sovereignty over the waterway.
*Nuclear Enrichment: Formal acceptance of Iran’s right to uranium enrichment.
*Lifting of Sanctions: The removal of all primary and secondary economic sanctions.
*U.S. Withdrawal: The full withdrawal of U.S. combat forces from the Middle East.
*War Reparations: Payment of full compensation to Iran for reconstruction costs and damages incurred during the war.
*Asset Release: The release of all frozen Iranian assets currently held by the U.S..
*Regional Cessation of Hostilities: An end to the war on all fronts, including those involving regional allies like Hezbollah in Lebanon.
*Binding UN Resolution: A UN Security Council resolution to make the entire agreement binding under international law.
*Termination of Legal Actions: Ending all International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and UN Security Council resolutions against Iran.
Trump claimed a “total and complete victory“, stating that the U.S. has already met and exceeded its core military objectives during the 38-day operation.
He also said that Iran’s enriched uranium would be “perfectly taken care of” as part of the settlement process, though he did not provide specific details.
Regional Implications
• Lebanon: There is conflicting information regarding Lebanon. While Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif stated the truce includes all allies including Hezbollah, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office clarified that the ceasefire does not include Lebanon.
• Pakistan Talks: Delegations from both countries are invited to Islamabad on Friday, April 10, 2026, to begin formal negotiations for a definitive peace agreement.
• Ongoing Tensions: Despite the announcement, missile alerts were reported in Israel, the UAE, Kuwait, and Bahrain early Wednesday morning as defensive systems intercepted threats shortly after the truce began.
Economic Impact
The announcement triggered a major relief rally in global markets. Oil prices plummeted—with Brent crude falling from roughly $110 to $95 per barrel—while U.S. stock futures and major Asian indexes like the Nikkei 225 surged on hopes of resumed trade through the strait.
