President Bola Tinubu has expressed profound sadness over the death of Ambassador Patrick Dele Cole, a veteran Nigerian diplomat, journalist, politician and public servant, who passed away at the age of 86.
In a State House press statement dated October 17, 2026, the President described Cole as a distinguished figure who devoted his life to national service across diplomacy, journalism and politics.
“I received with profound sadness the news of the passing of Ambassador Patrick Dele Cole, a distinguished diplomat, journalist, politician, and public servant, who died at 86,” Tinubu said.
The President highlighted Cole’s career as reflecting “the enduring value of dialogue, tact, mutual respect and the pursuit of shared interests in advancing national development and international cooperation.”
Tinubu particularly noted Cole’s contributions to Nigeria’s media landscape. As Managing Director of the Daily Times, Cole “upheld the vital role of the press in holding public officials accountable, speaking truth to power, and strengthening democratic governance.” The President said his legacy in journalism and public life “remains an enduring part of our national story.”
Cole, who turned 86 in August 2026, “witnessed defining moments in Nigeria’s history and contributed to the nation’s development through his work in the media, diplomacy and public service,” Tinubu added. “His life stands as a testament to the value of experience, principled engagement and commitment to the public good.”
The President extended heartfelt condolences to Cole’s family, friends, professional associates and all whose lives he touched, praying that memories of his remarkable life would bring them comfort. He also prayed that God grant Cole eternal rest and fortitude to those mourning him.
Cole, born on August 4, 1940, in Abonnema, Rivers State, previously served as Nigeria’s ambassador to Argentina and Brazil and as Special Adviser on International Relations to former President Olusegun Obasanjo. He died in London.
