A Yoruba socio-political and cultural group, Egbe Agba Itesiwaju Yoruba, has urged all Yoruba to rise and collectively confront spates of kidnappings and other forms of criminalities creeping into South West Nigeria.
The group made the call in a statement jointly signed by Agbaakin Tunde Adeleke Worldwide President and Pa Tafa Olawuyi Secretary General.
According to the group, “The recent tragic case of kidnapping of pupils, teachers and school principal of schools in Ogbomoso, Oriire local government area of Oyo State is completely shocking and of profound concern to us as community leaders, just as it is of concern to all well-meaning Nigerians home and abroad.
“We commiserate with the affected families who have endured pain, fear, and uncertainty because of this unfortunate incident. We strongly condemn this criminal act and call on all security agencies to intensify rescue efforts towards securing the safe release of all victims and bringing the perpetrators and their collaborators to justice.
“Reports of arrests linked to informant networks should be thoroughly investigated and prosecuted in accordance with the law. We are particularly disturbed by attempts by some individuals and groups to politicise this unfortunate incident and introduce religious sentiments into what is fundamentally a criminal and security matter. Such actions are irresponsible, divisive, and capable of distracting attention from the urgent task of rescuing the victims and addressing the growing insecurity confronting our communities.
“Equally troubling are the conflicting reports regarding the demands allegedly made by the kidnappers. While some reports claimed that a ransom of ₦1 billion and other conditions were demanded, victims who spoke from captivity subsequently disputed these claims and cautioned against the spread of misinformation.
“We therefore urge public officials, media organisations, and commentators to exercise restraint and ensure that only verified information is disseminated. False or unverified narratives can complicate rescue efforts and further endanger the lives of those in captivity. We call on the Federal Government, Oyo State Government, security agencies, traditional institutions, community leaders, and residents to strengthen intelligence gathering, improve security around schools and vulnerable communities, enhance surveillance of forest corridors, and deepen collaboration with local stakeholders in the fight against kidnapping.”
The Egbe Agba Itesiwaju Yoruba added that “At this critical moment, our collective focus must remain on the safety of the victims, justice for the affected families, and the restoration of peace and security in Oyo State and Yorùbáland.”
