Nigeria and Japan are exploring a proposed US$50 million fund to support Nigerian start-ups and boost youth employment as part of efforts to deepen bilateral ties.

This came to light when the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, received Japan’s Ambassador to Nigeria, H.E. Hideo Suzuki, on Monday, 26 October 2026, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja.

Talks between them centred on expanding cooperation in trade, investment, industrialisation and technology transfer, while also examining joint ventures, stronger private-sector partnerships and smoother business facilitation.

Both sides considered the establishment of a Japan Industrial and Investment Hub in Nigeria and the opening of a Consulate-General of Japan in Lagos.

Japan’s ongoing development support in agriculture, energy, healthcare, education and technical training was highlighted, alongside discussions on migration and collaboration in the creative sector.

A key focus was the proposed US$50 million fund aimed at Nigerian start-ups and youth employment.

Officials also stressed the need to strengthen institutional links and move toward concluding a Technical Cooperation Agreement.
The meeting reaffirmed both countries’ commitment to practical initiatives that advance shared interests and deepen long-term cooperation.
