Between 1994 and year 2000, It was a never-ending struggle to ensure the freedom of the Students of Federal Polytechnic Offa from the agents of military dictatorship, their agents, and the menace of the local vigilante group. In 1996 we attempted to conduct a Student’s Union election and transit to a new Students’ Union executive. Unfortunately, this exercise was truncated and subsequently, led to our arrest & detention.

After our recall following a protracted legal battle by Com. Jiti Ogunye & Com Nurudeen Ogbara, the menace of the local vigilante group became more ferocious and was at its peak, and in year 2000 an unimaginable terror was unleashed on the polytechnic community by the vigilante group maiming and killing our students.

Now, Barrister Belo Aideloje immediately relocated to Offa, assumed the role of a legal representative, counsellor, comrade and a brother.

Com. Belo fought the battle with diligence that one couldn’t have imagined.  He fearlessly represented us at the 2 commissions of enquiries instituted by the state and the Federal government. We thought it was our battle, but Comrade Belo had taken it over as his battle. Hardly would anyone who witnessed the diligent & passionate appearance of Comrade Belo Aideloje at the proceedings and the logic of his argument would forget our Comrade so soon.

It was one of the struggles that drained us physically & emotionally.  Comrade Belo gave us the most outstanding physical and emotional support. If we are on the floor, he was there with us, if we slept in a cage, he was there with us, if we were in Offa he was there, if we decided to be in Erin-ile he’ll also move with us. What a selfless and humble human being I have ever come across. If not for the formal dressing as a lawyer, he would have been mistaken as a student of Federal Polytechnic Offa as he had taken over the fight completely.

Our comrade was  no doubt a special creature, he’ll be missed by us, the students of Federal polytechnic Offa and all the oppressed people of Nigeria.

Very painful to say goodbye,  but blissful to celebrate your departure from sinful world as someone who had lived for humanity.

Rest well Comrade.

Kazeem Olasupo
Former President Federal Polytechnic Offa.
