After more than four months in detention, the Department of State Services (DSS) has released former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abdulrasheed Bawa.
He has been in custody since June when President Bola Tinubu suspended him.
Bawa was arrested and detained by the DSS on June 14, 2023, following an invite over undisclosed reasons, after he visited President Bola Tinubu earlier on the same day.
In a statement, Willie Bassey, Director of Information, Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, had said Bawa was suspended as a result of weighty allegations of abuse of office levelled against him.
He said said the suspension was to allow for proper investigation into his conduct while in office.
Among others, former Governor of Zamfara State and Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, had accused Bawa of demanding $2 million bribe from him.
In a swift reaction, Bawa denied the allegation, insisting that Matawalle must provide evidence publicly.
DSS spokesman, Peter Afunanya in a statement late Wednesday said: “DSS confirms release of former EFCC chairman, Abdulrasheed Bawa, a few hours ago (today 25th October 2023).”
