As Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) continues its 65th-anniversary celebrations, the university is set to break ground on a project that promises to redefine its role in national development.
This Saturday, 17 October 2026, the institution will host the foundation-laying ceremony for the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Centre for Youth Empowerment and Intercultural Dialogue.
The event, which is scheduled to commence at 10:00 a.m. at the historic Oduduwa Hall, represents a strategic pivot for the university. Under the leadership of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire, the project is being framed as a vital response to the urgent need for youth-oriented innovation and national unity.
In an internal memorandum issued to the 65th Anniversary Committee, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Professor G.A. Aderounmu, underscored the weight of the occasion. He described the centre as a “significant milestone” in the university’s ongoing commitment to leadership development, innovation, and intercultural understanding.
For a university that has long served as a crucible for Nigeria’s intellectual elite, this new centre is designed to be more than just an architectural addition. It is intended to function as a bridge connecting the academic rigor of the classroom with the practical, real-world demands of youth empowerment and cross-cultural integration.
A statement issued by the Office of the Vice Chancellor added that
”By naming the facility after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the university is also signaling a high-level alignment with national development goals, aiming to create a sustainable ecosystem where youth potential can be harnessed for the greater good of the country.
”As the university prepares to welcome guests to Oduduwa Hall this Saturday, the mood on campus is one of measured optimism. The foundation-laying ceremony will serve as the first physical step in a project that would become a blueprint for how Nigerian universities can actively contribute to solving the nation’s most pressing socio-economic challenges.
”For OAU, the message is clear: the next 65 years will be defined not just by the history it has written, but by the future it is now actively building.”
