United States President, Mr Donald Trump has announced that American military operations have largely ended the killing of Christians in Nigeria.

He stated this while speaking at the Faith & Freedom Coalition’s policy conference in Washington.

Trump claimed that the U.S. forces “hit them very hard” and successfully eliminated the top  leaders of the terrorist network responsible for the violence.

The Nigerian Defence Headquarters also confirmed that a series of joint U.S.-Nigeria airstrikes killed over 20 ISIS/ISWAP fighters in Metele, Borno State.

While the U.S. administration framed the military interventions as aimed at protecting religious freedom, the narrative remains highly debated.

Trump had previously designated Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern,” arguing that terrorist groups pose an existential threat specifically to the country’s Christian population.

The Federal Government of Nigeria consistently however rejects the characterisation of the conflict as a targeted religious genocide. Official statements emphasize that the security challenges—driven by insurgency, banditry, and criminal networks—impact both Muslim and Christian communities without distinction.
