Torrential rainfall: Nine persons rescued as building sinks in Lagos


Nine ladies have been rescued from a sinking building in Lagos.

This was revealed in an update made available to newsmen by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), on Monday.


The agency said it received a distress call in the early hours of Monday of a sinking storey building with nine persons trapped.

The NEMA gave the address of the building as 47, Akinwunmi Street, Akinwunmi North Estate, Mende, Maryland, Ikeja, Lagos State.


It revealed that a torrential rainfall overnight Sunday to Monday flooded lots of communities in Lagos.

It said after arrival and seeing the level of work to be done, its advance team called for more reinforcement of personnel.

Speaking with one of the trapped victims, who simply identified herself as Blessing, she disclosed that they were up to nine in the building, with most of them women.

Blessing said the landlord of the building used a ladder to escape.

NEMA questioned him for failure to contact emergency responders.

The Agencies involved in the rescue operation were NEMA, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Lagos State Fire Service and Police Disaster Management Unit.

NEMA said all the nine trapped ladies have been successful rescued.
