Tinubu renames University of Maiduguri after Buhari

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has renamed the University of Maiduguri after the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Tinubu announced this on Thursday during an expanded FEC meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja in honour of the former Nigerian leader.

Though from Daura, Katsina State, in the North West Nigeria, Buhari had a longstanding ties with Maiduguri, capital of Borno State in the North East of the county.

Following his participation in the 1975 coup detat that brought General Murtala Mohammed to power as military head of State, Buhari, then a Lieutenant Colonel was appointed Military Governor of North Eatern State with capital in Maiduguri.

An on 3rd February 1976 when the North Eastern State was carved into three- Bauchi, Borno and Gongola- he became the first Governor of Borno State from 3rd February 1976 to 15th March 1976.
