The Nigerian Muslims Network (NMN) has expressed deep condolences to the families and communities affected by the recent devastating flooding in Borno State, which caused significant loss of life, displacement, and destruction of property.
The group, in a press statement made available to The Shield Online (theshieldonlineng.com) said “Our thoughts and prayers are with those who have lost loved ones, as well as those struggling to recover from this tragic event.
“In particular, the NMN is gravely concerned about reports indicating that the flooding was exacerbated by the collapse of a dam, worsening the impact on local communities. This incident has raised serious questions about the safety and maintenance of infrastructure in flood-prone areas, as well as the overall preparedness to prevent and manage disasters of this nature.
“As a matter of urgency, the NMN calls on both the Federal Government of Nigeria and the Borno State Government to launch a thorough investigation into the cause of the dam collapse and the subsequent flooding. It is imperative that this investigation be transparent and comprehensive, involving experts in civil engineering, hydrology, and disaster management to ensure all contributing factors are identified.
” We demand that this inquiry be conducted with a sense of urgency, given the rainy season’s potential to trigger further disasters if immediate corrective measures are not taken.
“Furthermore, NMN urges the government to assess the current state of Nigeria’s dam infrastructure, particularly in flood-prone regions, to prevent future occurrences. There must be stringent safety protocols, regular inspections, and timely repairs or upgrades to critical infrastructure to safeguard human lives and livelihoods.
“The NMN also calls for improved flood management systems, early warning mechanisms, and disaster response strategies to be put in place to better protect vulnerable communities in the future. Public awareness and education on disaster preparedness must also be prioritized to ensure that residents are equipped with the knowledge and tools needed to mitigate risks in such situations.
We appeal to international partners and humanitarian organizations to provide necessary aid and support to the affected populations in Borno State as they work to rebuild their lives. We also encourage the government to strengthen collaboration with relevant stakeholders to ensure that long-term solutions are implemented.
“In this time of distress, the Nigerian Muslims Network stands in solidarity with the people of Borno State, and we reiterate our call for swift action to investigate this disaster and prevent future tragedies.”
