Kidnapped worshippers rescued in Ekiti after 67 days in captivity

Members of a Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) who were abducted in Ekiti State  have been rescued after spending 67 days in captivity.

The abduction occurred on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, when heavily armed men invaded an open-air crusade organised by the CAC in Eda Oniyo-Ekiti, within the Ilejemeje Local Government Area.

The officiating guest pastor was fatally shot before the gunmen rounded up fifteen worshippers—mostly women, toddlers, and young children—and dragged them into the forest.

The victims were rescued following a highly coordinated, intelligence-led operation, the Ekiti State Police Command announced in a statement on Saturday in Ado-Ekiti by its Police Public Relations Officer, SP Sunday Abutu.

The successful rescue mission was a joint effort between the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigerian military, the Amotekun Corps, local hunters, and the Ekiti State Government.

The survivors are currently on admission at the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH) in Ado-Ekiti, where they are undergoing medical evaluation and treatment.

Out of the 15 worshippers originally taken hostage, one victim tragically died while in captivity.
