In the heels of directive by President Bola Tinubu for the immediate release of minors detained and arraigned in court over recent #Endbadgovernance protests, the Inspector General of Police(IGP) has ordered investigation into their care while in police detection.

The minors looked hungry and malnourished when they were brought to court last Friday, sparking public outcry.

ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi,
Force Public Relations Officer, on Monday in a statement conveyed the investigation ordered by the IGP.

ACP Adejobi said “Following the recent remand and subsequent arraignment of some young individuals on Friday, 1st November, the Inspector-General of Police while in Algiers, Algeria for the African Union Mechanism for Police Cooperation committee meeting directed investigation into the conditions surrounding the care and welfare of these young persons while in Police detention facilities.

“Upon receiving the investigative report today in Glasgow, where the IGP is currently participating in Interpol General Assembly, the IGP vowed to thoroughly examine it and take necessary actions to address any procedural lapses or concerns.

“To further ensure professionalism in investigation with emphasis on child-friendly investigation and care, the IGP has summoned all DCs CID and Heads of Investigation Units to a conference and workshop on November 7, 2024, at the Police Resource Center, Jabi.

“The Nigeria Police Force reaffirms its commitment to upholding legal frameworks, ensuring fairness, and accountability, especially for vulnerable groups.”

President Bola Tinubu had earlier ordered immediate release of underaged boys arraigned in court on Friday in connection with the recent #Endbadgovernance protest.

Presidential spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga said this in a statement on Monday.

According to him, “President Bola Tinubu has directed the Attorney General of the Federation to do everything possible to ensure the immediate release of minors detained by the Nigeria Police in connection with the recent protests without prejudice to whatever legal processes are ongoing.

“The Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs has also been directed to ensure the safe return of all the minors to their families while an investigation has been opened into the circumstances leading to their prolonged detention.”
