Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, on Tuesday received the National President of the Ijaw Youth Council, Sir. Jonathan Lokpobiri, alongside members of the newly constituted 2026 National Electoral Committee at Government House, Yenagoa.
The visit was aimed at formally presenting the electoral committee to the governor, as part of preparations for the IYC national elections scheduled for July 11, 2026.
During the meeting, the IYC President briefed the governor on key developments within the council, including the review of its constitution, preparations for the forthcoming Boro Day Celebration, and the ongoing construction of the new IYC Secretariat.
Governor Diri commended the council’s leadership for its proactive engagement and commitment to strengthening the institution. He emphasized the need for unity, love, and fairness in all their dealings, urging the electoral committee to uphold the principles of transparency, credibility, and inclusiveness.
“It is always a thing of joy when the Ijaw people come together. The essence of these bodies is to galvanize support for our unity and oneness as a people,” the governor said.
“I congratulate you on the peaceful convention in Bomadi and for setting up an electoral body. As a youth-friendly government, we will continue to work hand in hand with you to ensure peace and development in Ijaw land.
“The IYC is not just a social platform; it is rooted in the history of our struggle. You must understand that responsibility and work in that direction. As leaders, you must be transparent, open, and unbiased to avoid division and ensure a rancour-free and united council.”
The meeting was attended by the Acting Chief of Staff, Mr. Irorodamie Komonibo, the Commissioner for Information, Orientation and Strategy, Hon. Ebiuwou Koku Obiyai, the Commissioner for Youth Development, Alfred Kemepado and other top government officials.
