Gov. Diri Hosts Secondary School Classmates To Gala Night

Governor of Bayelsa State, Douye Diri on Saturday hosted his classmates of Government Secondary School (GSS) Odi, to a Gala Night, as part of activities to mark their 50 years.

Speaking at the event held at the Chief DSP Alamieyeseigha Banquet Hall, Onopa, Yenagoa, governor Diri said :”We have had a long and a journey of half for 50 years that we can all attest to, it is a journey worthwhile, and in this journey some of us have left, from 1972 down to 2022, not all of us who went through that school are still alive. We have lost some very intelligent classmates and schoolmates, but by the grace of God, we are surviving and we are here today to celebrate 50 years of our existence as a school, let us thank God, first of all, for keeping us alive and allowing our alma mater, Government Secondary School Odi (GSS), to continue in turning out, very useful man power for our society and even beyond the shores of our society.


” My schoolmates, today is an epoch making day for all of us, today is our founders day that we use to go on with the war canoe in Odi to celebrate our founders day, but here we are as Alumni of this great institution gathered not to just merry but to give back to our school and our society.

“And so I like to appreciate the current Executive Council of the Odi Alumni Association, they have done very well for putting this together, I like to also appreciate all of us, who have been one way or the other given back to that school in terms of infrastructure, learning and sports competitions and all that we have done to ensure that our school will continue to grow from strength to strength.”


Earlier in the day, the governor in the company of his Deputy, Sen. Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, and other top government functionaries joined the rest of the Old Boys in a march past that covered about 5km across Odi community, after which he featured in a novelty football match between GSS Odi Alumni Boys and All-Stars Football Club, Yenagoa.

The match ended in a 2-2 draw with Gov. Diri, scoring the equalizing goal.

The event took interesting twists as spectators and participants were well entertained with Gov. Diri winning the Golden Boot for his outstanding play scoring from a penalty spot after All Stars team brought down a GSS player.
