Ogun State All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, has reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening food security, empowering farmers and promoting sustainable agricultural development in Ogun State.
Adeola, who currently represents Ogun West Senatorial District, said his agricultural interventions between 2025 and 2026 had reached 8,467 farmers through the provision of modern farming equipment, fertilisers, improved seedlings, irrigation facilities, financial grants and agricultural training.
The senator stated this in a message to commemorate World Food Day 2026, highlighting interventions designed to improve agricultural productivity, support farmers and expand food production across the state.
According to him, the programmes facilitated the distribution of 30 tractors to promote mechanised farming, 434 haulage tricycles to improve the transportation of agricultural produce and 18,560 bags of fertiliser to support crop production.
Other items distributed included 1,536 water pumps to improve irrigation, 3,300 knapsack sprayers for crop protection and 83 power tillers to support land preparation.
The interventions also covered improved seeds, seedlings and other essential agricultural inputs, alongside financial grants of ₦100,000 each to eligible beneficiaries.
Adeola said the initiatives extended beyond the distribution of farm equipment and inputs to include agricultural training, cooperative development and the formation of farmers’ clusters to promote the effective use of resources and improve productivity.
He explained that the interventions, which initially focused on Ogun West, had been expanded to cover farmers across the three senatorial districts of the state.
The senator described agriculture as a critical driver of economic growth, employment generation, rural development and food security, stressing the need to provide farmers with the necessary resources and opportunities to increase production and improve their livelihoods.
He said sustained investment in agricultural development remained important to strengthening food availability, supporting rural communities and creating economic opportunities for people engaged in farming and related businesses.
Adeola also acknowledged the contributions of farmers to food production and economic development, noting that their efforts remained central to building a more productive agricultural sector.
“As we commemorate World Food Day 2026, we reaffirm our commitment to strengthening food security, empowering farmers and promoting sustainable agricultural development across Ogun State,” he said.
He reiterated his commitment to supporting farmers with the resources and opportunities required to boost food production and improve their economic well-being.
World Food Day is observed annually on October 16 to raise awareness of hunger, food security and the need for sustainable food systems.
Adeola said the occasion provided an opportunity to recognise farmers’ contributions and renew efforts towards ensuring a more productive and food-secure Ogun State.
