The Nigeria Police Force has foiled a terrorist attack on a convoy along the Kareto–Damasak Road in Borno State, safely evacuating a gubernatorial aspirant, government officials and other political stakeholders without casualties.
According to the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, in the State-by-State Executive Summary of Police Operational Successes released on Friday, September 4, 2026, suspected terrorists attacked the convoy on September 3 with an improvised explosive device (IED) and rocket-propelled grenades.
Police tactical operatives reportedly counter-engaged the attackers, forcing them to retreat into the surrounding bush.
The operatives subsequently scanned and cleared the immediate area to neutralise possible secondary explosive threats before safely evacuating the convoy to a secure location.
The incident is currently under investigation by the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Maiduguri.
Five Kidnap Victims Rescued in Nasarawa, Enugu
The Police also reported the successful rescue of five abducted persons in separate operations in Nasarawa and Enugu states.
In Nasarawa, sustained police and security operations following an earlier abduction at Zherugba Village, Obi Local Government Area, led to the release of two remaining hostages identified as 41-year-old Margaret Ninje and 22-year-old Ilisha Lovina.
The victims are receiving medical attention, while police said one other victim had earlier escaped from the kidnappers.
In Enugu State, combined security forces, acting under sustained tactical pressure following an abduction in Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area, forced kidnappers to release three hostages unharmed.
The victims were debriefed and reunited with their families, while intelligence-driven operations have been intensified to apprehend the fleeing suspects.
Police Arrest Robbery, Rape Suspects
In Akwa Ibom State, police detectives arrested 29-year-old Thankgod Donald Ekpe during a raid on a suspected armed robbery hideout at Ikot Akpabong Village, Mkpat Enin Local Government Area.
One locally made pistol and two machetes were recovered from the suspect.
In another operation in the state, police arrested Timothy Bassey over allegations of armed robbery and rape at Itam. A knife/dagger allegedly used in the commission of the offences was recovered from him.
Bayelsa State Police Command also arrested 22-year-old Prince Braveman following a distress call over an alleged rape incident at Otuoke Community, Ogbia Local Government Area.
Other Arrests and Recoveries
In Delta State, police anti-crime operatives intercepted two suspects, Simon Obi and Chigozie Okolie, allegedly in possession of a vehicle loaded with aluminium roofing sheets suspected to have been stolen from the NYSC Camp.
The vehicle and roofing sheets were impounded as exhibits as investigations continue to determine the source of the materials and identify other possible accomplices.
In Gombe State, police arrested 19-year-old Umar Muhammed following information about an armed robbery and assault at Kagarawal Quarters, Gombe.
Efforts are ongoing to apprehend his fleeing accomplices.
Meanwhile, police intervention in Ekiti State prevented a violent communal dispute between youths of Ikogosi-Ekiti and Erijiyan-Ekiti from escalating further.
Tactical teams were deployed
following the escalation of the dispute into a communal clash. Through coordinated intervention and engagement with traditional authorities, the youths were pacified and normalcy restored.
The police said security personnel remain deployed in the area to prevent a recurrence.
The Force said the various cases remain under investigation by the respective SCIDs, while intelligence-led operations are continuing to apprehend fleeing suspects and bring them to justice.
