The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) has commenced an investigation into a suspected hazardous chemical spill on the Kaduna–Abuja Expressway after a road accident left an unidentified substance scattered across the highway that looks like fallen clouds.
According to a statement by the agency’s Director of Press, Nwamaka Ejiofor, a team from NESREA’s Kaduna State Office, led by the State Coordinator, Mr. Hena Dangari Emmanuel, was deployed to the scene to carry out an on-the-spot assessment.
The investigative team met with the Divisional Police Officer in Jere, ACP Sani Zubairu, officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and community leaders to obtain firsthand information about the incident.
Initial investigations indicate that the spill resulted from a crash involving a heavy-duty truck transporting chemical materials, leading to the appearance of unusual white foam around the accident scene.
To establish the exact nature of the substance, NESREA collected samples of the foam, surrounding soil, and water from a nearby stream for laboratory testing, while also gathering eyewitness accounts from security agencies and residents.
The agency urged motorists, residents, and commuters to avoid contact with the affected area, warning that the substance may pose health and environmental risks until scientific analysis confirms its safety. NESREA assured the public that further updates would be provided as the investigation progresses.
