The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 northern states and the Federal Capital Territory, alongside local bishops, have rejected United States President Donald Trump’s claim that US military intervention has “largely ended” the killing of Christians in Nigeria.
During a Washington event, Donald Trump asserted that recent US airstrikes in northwest Nigeria dismantled terrorist networks, saying the US “largely ended the slaughter of great Christian populations” and eliminated their top three leaders.
However, Rev. Joseph Hayab, Chairman of the Northern CAN chapter, dismissed the claim as misleading and detached from realities on the ground, emphasizing that everyday citizens are still facing persistent killings and abductions across multiple states.
The religious body argued that only the direct victims of the insecurity within Nigeria are fit to assess whether safety has improved, warning that treating the conflict with premature political triumph trivialises a very active crisis.
The United States Africa Command (US-AFRICOM), operating alongside the Nigerian military, launched joint air campaigns targeting Islamic State (ISIS/ISWAP) strongholds in states like Sokoto and Borno.
Local experts however note that while religious tensions exist, a significant amount of the violence in northern Nigeria is fueled by non-religious complexities, including territorial grazing conflicts, criminal banditry, and ransom demands affecting both Christian and Muslim residents.
This CAN is unfortunately naive of what Trump stands for all over the world. He is neither a committed Christian nor a saviour as he is claiming. He is a political and business adventurer.
If you feel like converting Nigeria to a Christian state, goodluck to you.
