Today, we celebrate not just the passing of a year, but the enduring spirit of a true professional, a steadfast colleague, and a reliable friend—our own Bros D, Dele Fashomi.

My journey with Bros D began in the vibrant, ink-and-headline-filled halls of Concord Press of Nigeria Limited back in 1992. He was the sharp Sub Editor on the Sub Desk, and I, a Senior Correspondent on the News Desk. While our desks were different, our foundation was the same: the relentless pursuit of journalism in the service of truth.

That commitment was tested in the fire of our nation’s history. The annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election plunged us all into a period of profound uncertainty. With our publisher, the winner of that annulled election, detained and our company under the relentless siege of the military juntas of Babangida and Abacha, we faced dire economic straits. It was in this crucible of adversity that the true mettle of individuals was revealed.

It was also the moment that forged a closer bond between us. Answering the call of the late Pini Jason, we joined the brave venture that was The Examiner. Under the editorship of Frank Igwebueze, our paths converged. He was drafted as the Production Editor, and I, the News Editor. It was at The Examiner that I truly witnessed the architect in Bros D. He was the master planner—the one who meticulously crafted the entire newspaper, from its pagination and style to its very soul. He didn’t just fill pages; he gave the publication its structure and identity.

Our professional symphony would continue through the halls of Compass Publishing Company Limited, a testament to a partnership built on mutual respect and a shared understanding of the craft.

Through all these years, as a younger friend and colleague, I have come to know and deeply admire the man that Bros D is. He is the very definition of straightforward—a thoroughbred professional who brooks no nonsense. He is a man of quiet principle, one who would never lobby for elevation but would fiercely fight for his entitlement. He carries an unwavering sense of his own professional worth, so much so that he is prepared to walk away from a role, even into the unknown, if that worth is not recognised or he is deprived of what is rightfully his.

But beyond this formidable exterior lies a heart of gold. Bros D is reliable and dependable. He is one of the very few I have proudly classed into the ‘Kajola’ category—a friend who will stand with you, support you to the very end, and hold the line when it matters most. His loyalty is not given lightly, but once given, it is unshakable.

So, on this special day, we honour you, Bros D. We honour your integrity, your courage, and your unwavering friendship. You are a pillar and an inspiration.

Happy birthday, Bros D! May this new year bring you the joy, peace, and fulfilment you so richly deserve. May your path be smooth, and may you continue to stand tall in all you do.

With utmost respect and warm wishes.
