The Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University (LASU), Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello and Registrar of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN), Dr. Ndaji Alhassan have charged 46 newly inducted nurses of the Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM) to regard their certificates and Oath as a badge of responsibilities and commitment to uphold the highest standards of ethics.
The Vice-Chancellor, who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics), Prof. Oseni Afisi, gave the charge on Friday, 31st July 2026, at the 7th Induction and Oath-Taking Ceremony for Bachelor of Nursing Science (BNSc) graduates held at the Medical Sciences Building Auditorium, LASUCOM.
Addressing the 46 inductees, Prof. Olatunji-Bello said, “Your certificates are a badge of responsibility and a call to serve and covenant to uphold the highest standards of ethics” adding that LASU takes pride in the quality of graduates it produces and that the LASUCOM Nursing programme has continued to thrive in that regard.
In a related charge, the Registrar/Chief Executive Officer of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN), Dr. Ndaji Alhassan, congratulated the inductees on the successful completion of their Bachelor of Nursing Science programme and urged them to make the knowledge and experience acquired during their training the foundation of their professional practice.
Represented at the ceremony by Dr. Umar Gambo, Dr. Alhassan described the induction as the beginning of the graduates’ professional careers, stressing that “a lot is being expected from every one of you as Certified Polyvalent-Graduates Nurses.”
The NMCN Registrar urged the new nurses to remain committed to continuous professional development and to learn from experienced colleagues during their internship and beyond.
“You must be willing to learn from your senior professional colleagues already working in the clinical areas during internship and beyond,” he said, advising them to “accept corrections, improve and make adjustment positively where necessary” in order to grow into seasoned professionals
In his opening remarks, the Provost of LASUCOM, Prof. Olufemi E. Idowu, urged the inductees to recognise the responsibilities and privileges attached to wearing the nursing uniform.
“Nursing is not merely a career of tasks and medications. It is a profound human connection,” the Provost said, charging the new nurses to combine their intellectual abilities with compassion in the service of humanity.
Prof. Idowu also acknowledged the contributions of the families and loved ones of the graduates, as well as the College’s faculties and mentors, for their sacrifices and support throughout the students’ training.
Goodwill messages from the CMD, LAUSTH – Prof. Adetokunbo O. Fabanwo, The Director of Nursing Services for the Lagos State Health Service Commission – Nurse Adebukola O. Cole called on the inductees to continuously build on knowledge, have a compassionate spirit and stand unwavering when faced with heartbreaking and strenuous dilemma.
The ceremony also featured the presentation of prizes to outstanding graduates. Nr. Adeyemi O. Fatima emerged as the Overall Best Graduating Student, while Nr. Lawal Temidayo Samuel received the prize for Best in the Registered Nurse (RN) Examination.
The induction marks another milestone in LASUCOM’s commitment to producing professionally competent nurses equipped with the knowledge, skills and values required to contribute meaningfully to healthcare delivery and the wellbeing of society.
