Mrs Tinubu recently celebrated her birthday. I would have liked it if the event was marked with the passing of a Nigerian Women’s Bill 2025 that looks like this
[1] We are hereby scrapping of all laws which limit a woman’s right to inherit family property
[2] Child marriages shall become criminalised immediately with a minimum 10 year prison sentence for convicted criminals
[3] As from May 2027, 50% women’s representation will be guaranteed in all elected and appointed positions
[4] Free smear tests will be made available in all of Nigeria’s 36 states and 774 local government areas
[5] Free childcare centres will be built and their services made available in all 774 local government areas of Nigeria
[6] Paid maternity leave will be compulsory as from January 1 2025
[7] Free breast cancer screening and treatment will be available in every state capital
[8] Nigeria’s federal government will provide free maternity centres in every local government area and free sanitary towels will be handed out to all students
[9] Sex with a minor becomes statutory rape as from October 1 2025, carrying a five year prison sentence, while marrying a minor carries a 10 year prison sentence
[10] Domestic violence will carry a minimum of a five year sentence
