Security operatives have arrested a suspected Boko Haram spy in Monguno, Borno State, over his alleged involvement in the recent terrorist attack on Cross Kauwa and a series of kidnappings in the area.
The suspect, identified as Abulfatahi, was arrested on July 27 during an intelligence-led operation targeting members of a terrorist intelligence network operating in Monguno.
Security sources said two other suspected members of the network had earlier been apprehended and transferred to the Joint Intelligence Fusion Centre (JIFC) for further investigation.
During interrogation, the suspect allegedly confessed to working for a Boko Haram commander identified as Akilu, who reportedly coordinates terrorist activities in Dabar Masara and Garin Mace.
According to the sources, Abulfatahi admitted to collecting levies on behalf of the terrorist commander and helping to identify individuals for abduction around Monguno.
Investigators also recovered two telephone numbers allegedly linked to Akilu from the suspect’s mobile phone as security agencies intensify efforts to dismantle the terrorist network.
The sources said investigations are ongoing to identify other collaborators, determine the full scope of the network’s operations, and support counter-terrorism efforts across the Lake Chad region.
A comprehensive investigation report is expected at the conclusion of the inquiry.
