Alleged Homicide at Al-Azhar Academy, Zaria: JSS Student’s Death Leads to School Closure

The Kaduna State Schools Quality Assurance Authority (KSSQAA) has been thrust into action following a tragic incident at Al-Azhar Academy, Kofar Gayan, Turunku Road, Zaria, which has resulted in the indefinite closure of the school.

On Friday, October 20, 2023, a heartbreaking occurrence unfolded at Al-Azhar Academy, involving a punishment-related incident and the subsequent death of a JSS III (Basic 9) student identified as Marwan Nuhu Sambo. The incident raised concerns, prompting swift response from the KSSQAA and the Ministry of Education, representing the Kaduna State Government.

A fact-finding mission was launched by the KSSQAA, seeking to piece together the events leading to this tragedy. The team commenced its investigation at Al-Azhar Academy, engaging with the school authorities. The next stop was the victim’s home, where they offered condolences and spoke with the bereaved family and the victim’s schoolmates. Subsequently, the team visited the Divisional Police Headquarters in Zaria City, where the school Principal and Vice-Principal were in detention. Their inquiry led them to Hajiya Gambo Sawaba General Hospital in Zaria, where the unfortunate demise of Marwan Nuhu Sambo was formally confirmed. The fact-finding team’s journey concluded at the graveyard, where the victim was said to have been laid to rest, revealing a freshly dug grave.

The Kaduna State Government, under the leadership of Governor Uba Sani, has expressed its unwavering commitment to ensuring a conducive learning environment, equity, and justice. It appeals to the public for calm and cooperation while the investigation unfolds, with the aim of delivering justice.

In light of the ongoing investigation and the need for a thorough examination of the incident, the Kaduna State Schools Quality Assurance Authority, guided by its establishment Act (amended 2015), has taken the decision to temporarily close Al-Azhar Academy, Zaria. The school premises will remain sealed until the investigation concludes.

The tragic incident at Al-Azhar Academy has underscored the critical importance of maintaining a safe and nurturing learning environment for students, and the Kaduna State Government is committed to upholding these principles.
