The management of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) has finalized plans to accommodate a dedicated “German Village” on campus following a high-level diplomatic visit by the Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Lagos, Mr. Daniel Kroll.
The strategic meeting, organized by the Department of Foreign Languages, the Vice Chancellors Office ,hosted at Floor 0, Room 5, took place on September 24, 2026. It yielded monumental gains for the university, including life-changing scholarship opportunities for 10 OAU students heading to Germany.
Speaking on the milestone, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire, expressed immense delight at the deepening ties between the institution and the German government, noting that the university remains fiercely committed to fostering international partnerships that translate to tangible global exposure for its students.
“We are profoundly gladdened by this enduring partnership, which continues to open doors of excellence for our students,” Professor Bamire stated. “The approval for a German Village on our campus is a welcome development. OAU possesses the land space and the intellectual readiness to support this laudable project, and we are fully prepared to give it the necessary backing to fly.”
The German Consul General, during his interaction with principal university officers including DVC Academics Professor Adronmu, DVC Administration Professor Akinfala, Dean of Student Affairs Professor Odedire, and other senior academics laudably singled out OAU for its stellar academic consistency.
Mr. Kroll revealed that previous beneficiaries of the scholarship scheme from OAU have distinguished themselves remarkably, even working directly at the German parliament. With the addition of the 10 newly selected scholars, the total number of OAU students who have enjoyed the prestigious scheme has now risen to 22.
“Our future prosperity is knowledge-based,” Mr. Kroll remarked during the session at Floor 0, Room 5. “I am deeply impressed by the architecture and academic heritage of this great institution. The real collaboration is yet to take place, but you have already created a formidable foundation.”
One of the most unforgettable highlights of the day was a mesmerizing musical rendition by the students. Performing entirely in the German language, the students stunned the Consul General with nostalgic poems and songs originally composed in Yoruba, but skillfully translated into German.
It was a poignant bridge between two distinct cultures proving that art truly knows no borders.
Building on this linguistic synergy, the discussions quickly turned to policy. The Consul General revealed plans to advocate at the Federal level to see German integrated as a third language in Nigerian schools, seeking strategic advice from OAU’s linguistic experts.

Students treated the Consul General and university management to a breathtaking rendition of nostalgic poems and songs originally written in Yoruba, but masterfully translated and performed in the German language.
Capitalizing on the academic momentum, the German envoy also explored policy-level partnerships, seeking expert advice from OAU linguistics to push for German to be recognized as a third language in Nigerian schools. Furthermore, he emphasized that OAU’s vast expanse of land serves as an ideal canvas for ecological innovation, pledging institutional support for green energy initiatives on campus.
Closing the strategic engagement, university management specifically requested enhanced library resources to bolster German language studies—a request the Consul General readily agreed to facilitate through his diplomatic channels.
As OAU solidifies its status as a global citadel of learning, the impending establishment of the German Village marks a bold new chapter in international town-and-gown relations.
