The House of Representatives has mourned the death of veteran journalist and media entrepreneur, Dotun Samson Oladipo, describing his passing as a significant loss to Nigeria’s media industry and national life.
Oladipo, the Publisher of The Eagle Online and Chief Executive Officer of Premium Eagle Media Limited, died on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, at the age of 56.
In a condolence statement issued on Thursday by the House spokesman, Rep. Akin Rotimi Jr., the House acknowledged Oladipo’s decades of service to Nigerian journalism across the traditional and digital media sectors.
The late journalist worked with several leading Nigerian newspapers, including Newswatch, Nigerian Tribune, Nigerian Compass, The Sun and PUNCH Newspapers, where he served as Politics Editor.
He later established The Eagle Online, bringing his extensive newsroom experience to digital publishing and contributing to the growth and professionalisation of online journalism in Nigeria.
The House particularly commended Oladipo’s coverage of the National Assembly, noting that through The Eagle Online, he helped amplify the activities and legislative work of the House of Representatives through credible and balanced reporting.
The statement also recalled Oladipo’s experience as a journalist covering conflict zones in West Africa.
In 1998, while reporting events surrounding the restoration of former Sierra Leone President Ahmad Tejan Kabbah, Oladipo and other Nigerian journalists travelled to Liberia, where they were detained by forces loyal to then-President Charles Taylor.
They were subsequently extracted by Nigerian ECOMOG troops, with Oladipo sustaining injuries during the ordeal.
According to the House, the incident demonstrated the risks undertaken by journalists covering Nigeria’s regional peacekeeping engagements at the time.
Beyond journalism, Oladipo played an active role in professional media organisations. He was the founding President of the Innovative Media Partners Cooperative Multipurpose Society (IMPCMS) and served as President of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP) from 2017 to 2021.
The House said his leadership contributed to efforts to organise and professionalise Nigeria’s rapidly expanding online publishing industry.
It also described Oladipo as a calm, easy-going, thoughtful and dependable gentleman whose character earned him the respect and affection of colleagues and associates.
“At a time when credible journalism remains indispensable to informed citizenship, public accountability and democratic governance, his passing represents a significant loss to Nigeria’s media community and national life,” the statement said.
The House extended its condolences to Oladipo’s family, the management and staff of The Eagle Online and Premium Eagle Media Limited, members of GOCOP and IMPCMS, as well as his colleagues, associates and friends across the media industry.
The lawmakers honoured his “decades of service to Nigerian journalism,” courage in the pursuit of truth, contribution to digital media and the humanity for which he was remembered.
The House prayed that God would grant his family and loved ones the strength to bear the loss and grant his soul eternal rest.
