A former Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Soyemi Coker, has passed away at the age of 66.
The prominent politician died on Sunday, July 19, 2026, while preparing for Sunday worship in Lagos State.
Reacting to the sudden demise, Nigeria’s immediate past High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Ambassador Sarafa Tunji Isola, described the development as a painful loss to Nigeria’s democratic community.
In a statement personally signed on Monday, Isola expressed profound sorrow over the transition of the former lawmaker, who also represented the Odeda State Constituency.
“Rt. Hon. Coker was a man of honour, uncommon humility, and unwavering commitment to public service,” Isola stated. “Throughout his distinguished career, he demonstrated exemplary leadership, promoted democratic values, and remained steadfast in his dedication to the welfare of the people he served.”
During his tenure as Speaker, Coker was credited with providing purposeful leadership and strengthening legislative governance in Ogun State. Isola noted that Coker’s wisdom, calm disposition, and integrity earned him deep admiration across political divides.
Reflecting on the nature of his death, Isola said “The circumstances surrounding his passing, while preparing to worship his Creator, remind us of the certainty of life and the importance of living each day with purpose and service to humanity. Though his earthly journey has ended, his enduring legacy of sacrifice, patriotism, and honourable leadership will continue to inspire present and future generations.”
Isola extended his heartfelt condolences to the Coker family, the people of the Odeda State Constituency, and the government of Ogun State.
He prayed for Almighty God to grant the deceased eternal rest and comfort those affected by the irreparable loss.
