Peter Obi’s persistent history of defections

Mr Peter Obi has a long history of defections  between parties, most recently decamping from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on May 3, 2026.

He cited internal crises, endless court cases, and “hostility” as reasons for leaving the ADC, a party he had joined only months earlier as part of a broad opposition coalition.

His political journey includes several key transitions:
• All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA): Obi rose to national prominence here, serving as the Governor of Anambra State from 2006 to 2014. Despite once swearing he would never leave APGA, he eventually resigned to join the PDP.
• Peoples Democratic Party (PDP): He joined in 2014 and was the vice-presidential candidate to Alhaji Atiku Abubakar in 2019. He resigned from the PDP in May 2022, just days before its presidential primary, citing “recent developments” that made it impossible to continue.
• Labour Party (LP): Obi defected to the LP in May 2022 and ran as its presidential candidate in 2023, finishing third. He officially left the LP in December 2025 following a leadership rift and joined the ADC.
• African Democratic Congress (ADC): He formally joined on December 31, 2025, but announced his resignation today, Sunday, May 3, 2026.

Reports suggest he may be looking toward a newly registered National Democratic Congress (NDC) with Rabiu Kwankwaso, though he has not yet confirmed his next destination.
