The Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, Dr. Isa Ali Pantami inaugurated the Steering Committee of the National Broadband Plan 2020-2025 in Abuja today, July 9, 2020.
The Minister who announced Engr. Ubale Maska, the Executive Commissioner, Technical Services, NCC as the Chairman of the committee cast the minds of the people in attendance to the new mandate of the Digital Economy Ministry when the President approved the proposal to transform the various institutions making up the ministry from just ICT institutions to digital institutions.
The minister in each speech said,
” The most critical problems in the industry which the EVC of the NCC and other industry stakeholders were complaining about when I came into office are RoW, the need to protect telecom infrastructure and issue of multiple taxation.
“Today, we have taken concrete measures to address these critical challenges confronting the industry.” He said.
He stressed further that “The implementation of the BPP 2020-2025 has been ongoing as can be seen from the current level of broadband penetration in the country which has increased to 40.1%”.
On the importance of the broadband plan, he noted that “The ICT has contributed 14.07% to the GDP in the first quarter of 2020. The more broadband plan penetration we achieve, the greater contribution to the GDP”
The importance of broadband penetration include; job creation, improved standard of living, and economic growth and development among others.
Setting the agenda for the committee, the minister stated the aim of the broadband penetration plan thus,
“The National Broadband plans 2020 – 2025 aims to provide broadband for 90% of Nigerians over the next 5 years at download speeds of 25Mbps in urban areas and 10Mbps in rural areas,”
The Chairman of the newly inaugurated committee, Engr. Ubale Maska, said in his remark that B”is central to any digital economy. We are humbled to be members of the committee responsible for steering the implementation of the NBBP. We express our commitment to bring to bear our wealth of experiences for the successful implementation of the BBP”
Assuring the Minister of the commitment of the Nigerian Communication Communication, the Director General of the Commission, Prof. Danbatta said,
“We congratulate the Minister for putting in place the Implementation and Steering Committee for the Broadband Plan 2020-2025. The NCC promises its commitment to the effective implementation of the BBP”
