Benfica coach Jorge Jesus has indicated that what made Diego Maradona stand out as a player was his passion for the game of football.
The Portuguese tatacticians compared the Argentine with the Barcelona captain Lionel Messi, as well as Juventus forward Cristiano Ronaldo, pointing out that the two elite players are not as passionate as Maradona was.
“Maradona was the best player in history along with Pele,” Jesus told the press. “Pele is still here, he’s alive, but Diego was the greatest.
“Not only because of what he was as a genius and a player, but because of the way he showed it. That marked the difference.
“Diego was top in the world, but he had a passion for the game, for football. He was born to be a footballer, he was born with everything. He is not an end product of hard work.
“Love, [that’s] the feeling he had with the ball. But today, among the two best in the world, Cristiano Ronaldo has a little bit of that, Messi has nothing. He has no passion at all.
“Messi is a great player. But we are talking about what life and feelings are, having a passion for the game and football. I think Maradona was outstanding in relation to others.”
