John Mahama is seeking election for the first office of the country on the platform of the National Democratic Congress.

Agyemang served as minister under John Mahama until President Nana Akufo-Addo of the New Patriotic Party took over in January 2017.

Both the National Democratic Congress and the New Patriotic Party have dominated Ghanian politics since 1992.

While Akufo-Addo will be facing Mahama for the third consecutive time when he sees reelection in December, Agyemang will be the only woman representing a major party in key position in the election.

Prof. Naana Jane Opogu Agyemang is the first female Vice Chancellor of a public university in Ghana between 2008 and 2012.

In her acceptance statement she writes
“I am humbled by the overwhelming endorsement my nomination has received from the founder founder of the NDC, H.E Jerry Rawlings, the Council of Elders, the National Executive Committee, and the rank and file of our party, as well as the general public.

This historic nomination is not a personal achievement but victory for inclusive and participatory democracy, which enhances the credentials of our country and recognizes the towering role women have played over the ages to achieve the progress we have made.”
