El-Rufai holds emergency meeting with stakeholders on security situation in Zangon-Kataf LGAs

 

Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State  on Wednesday chaired a meeting of major security agencies with elected officials, traditional rulers and community leaders from Kauru and Zangon-Kataf local government areas ( LGAs)  to review the security situation in there.

On June 29, the State Executive Council set up a White Paper Committee on 1992 Zangon-Kataf crisis in order to bring to closure issues that have lingered, unresolved since the crisis against the backdrop of continued contentions over farmlands resulting in conflicts in the area.

The Governor during the meeting assured the stakeholders that the Kaduna State Government will uphold the right of every citizen to live in peace and harmony. He called on the community to expose and report the few that engage in the incitement and violent actions that menace and endanger the many.

Leaders from the concerned areas also provided updates and suggestions for the restoration of peace. They expressed regret at the violent clashes and the loss of lives and property and assured the government that the communities are working to restore peace.

The stakeholders appealed to Kaduna State Government to take firm action against persons using conventional and social media to foment and worsen crisis in the area with fake news and incitement, noting that many of such persons do not even live in the areas concerned.

Mallam Nasir El-Rufai appealed to the stakeholders to take leadership in their communities as elected officials and traditional rulers appointed by legitimate authority. He said that ceding the narrative to non formal actors is not helpful to the cause of peace and the rule of law.

He said that it was up to the stakeholders to controvert false narratives, noting that the portrayal of southern Kaduna as unsafe deters development and investments. He welcomed the determination of the stakeholders to turn the page on the cycle of clashes and reprisals.

The Governor stated that he would await advice from the core security agencies on the request to review the curfew hours.

The meeting was attended by the Agwatyap, HRH Dominic Gambo Yahaya, HRH the Chief of Chawai, Alhaji Yahaya Mohammed, Hon Mukhtar Chawai and Hon. Amos Magaji, the members representing Kauru and Zangon/Jaba federal constituencies respectively, Hon. Isaac Auta Zankai, Deputy Speaker Kaduna State House of Assembly representing Kauru state constituency and Hon. Angulu Kwasau representing Zangon state constituency; Elias Mamza, chairman Zangon-Kataf LGA and Shuaibu Goma, chairman Kauru LGA.
