The Geneva-based organization made this known in a tweet that reads thus:

“We learned that hackers are impersonating WTO Director-General Roberto Azevêdo using a Telegram account linked to his phone number. This is to inform all that the DG does not have, and has never had, a Telegram account. If you receive any such contact, please ignore it.
The WTO’s cybersecurity team is working to address this situation with the relevant authorities. Unfortunately, all efforts to address this issue with the telegram platform have been so far unsuccessful.”

Roberto Azevêdo, a career Brazilian diplomat whose second term as the Director-General of the World Trade Organization was to end by September 2021 resigned his position earlier this year effective Aug. 31. The organization is currently in the process of selecting a new Director-General to replace Azevedo.
